General Advising Questions

How To Connect With Your Academic Advisor
  • Current students can schedule appointments with their assigned Advisor online through Student Support Network.

    1. Log in to Student Support Network
    2. Click on the "Schedule an Appointment" button.
    3. Find and select the support team member you'd like to schedule with.
      • Note: "Not Available" will show if they do not have any availability.
    4. Select a Topic & Subtopic.
    5. Select a Date & Time.
    6. Add comments. This helps Advisors prepare for the appointment.
    7. Select a Location. Academic Advising is located in Main Hall 208. Advisors also offer appointments through Microsoft Teams or Phone Call.
    8. A confirmation pop-up will appear, and you'll receive a confirmation email.
    9. If you have having difficulty scheduling an appointment using Student Support Network, please contact us.
  • The best methods of contacting your Academic Advisor is by email or scheduling an appointment.

    Undergraduate students at UCCS have an Academic Advisor assigned to them. These assignments are based on students last names and majors. Students can find their assigned Academic Advisor by following these steps:

    1. Log into myUCCS Portal.
    2. On the home page, find your Student Profile.
    3. Either expand or scroll down in this window to find your assigned Academic Advisor.

    Students can also visit the Advisors and Staff page and use the drop down menu to find advisors for their major.

  • No, but it is recommended...

    Meeting with your assigned advisor is not always required unless you are a first-year student at UCCS. Some students, depending on class standing, academic standing, or major may be required to meet with their assigned advisor before registering for the next semester.

  • Academic Advisors provide students at UCCS assistance and guidance with many things along the student journey. These can include but are not limited to the following:

    • Developing an academic plan and course selection
    • Explaining UCCS's degree programs
    • Military Forms (104R, Form 48, ROTC, etc.)
    • Graduation Check/Senior Audit
    • Transfer Credits
    • Probation/Suspension
    • Degree Audit Questions
    • Study Abroad/National Student Exchange
  • If you need a form completed, please bring that with you to the appointment. Prepare a list of questions or issues that you would like to discuss with your advisor. If you need help thinking about what to talk to your advisor about, consider the following:

    • What tools and resources are available for students?
    • Does this college have a student organization?
    • How often should I see my advisor?
    • Does this college have its own career services office?
    • Is there a limit to the number of times I can schedule an advising appointment each term?
    • How do I navigate a conversation with my instructor, faculty, or department?
  • Please let your Academic Advisor know as soon as possible! Students are able to cancel or reschedule their appointments through the Studuent Support Network or by contacting our Front Desk during normal business hours.

Selecting Degrees, Majors, Minors, Courses

General Academic Questions
  • At the undergraduate level, UCCS offers three different degrees:

    • Bachelor of Arts (BA): These degrees are designed to prepare you with critical thinking skills, communication skills, and a foundation in the humanities.
    • Bachelor of Science (BS): These degrees prepares students for graduate programs (Master's and PhD) in science and engineering, or for some STEM careers, such as engineering, lab technicians and more.
    • Bachelor of Innovation (BI): Like a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts, the BI has major field of study, but it also has a common core in innovation and entrepreneurship, including a unique long-term, multidisciplinary team experience. The innovative BI degree program draws on courses across colleges.
  • A college major refers to your course of study's primary focus while pursuing a bachelor's degree. A minor is a secondary focus, after your major, that allows you to pursue a personal interest and demonstrate extra value to future employers. To complete a minor, students typically take around half as many credits in a secondary subject as they take for their major.

    Another difference between a major and minor is that a major appears on your diploma, while a minor doesn't. Despite this, minors can provide extra detail on a resume when appropriate.

    If you are unsure what to major in, UCCS students are able to remain undeclared or "deciding" for up to 60 credit hours.

  • A good place to start is by utilizing your degree audit and sample advising guides that are available to students. However, this approach may not work for all students enrolled at UCCS. Academic Advisors recognize students have individual needs, so the best way to get started on navigating your degree progression is by meeting with your Academic Advisor.

  • Yes, you will want to work with your assigned advisor to make sure that the course and school you will be attending will transfer to fulfill a requirement for your degree.

  • Connect with an advisor for the major

    To change your major, the best way is to contact your Academic Advisor notifying them you would like to change your major. Sometimes your advisor may also advise for that major! If not, please contact our Front Desk during normal business hours to get connected with the appropriate advisor.

  • A certificate is a credential that confirms that you completed a specific course or program of study (a sequence of courses). Certificates are used to demonstrate knowledge and skills in a particular subject area. Certificate program can help you gain subject matter expertise ina relatively short amount of time. Certificates can be completed with at least 12 credit hours.

  • Contact your academic advisor to make sure we have an official copy of your college transcript(s) on file. If not, you will need to send and official copy of your college transcripts to ugapp@uccs.edu. If you were dual enrolled in high school, UCCS will need both high school and college transcripts.

Terms & Policies To Know

Definitions
  • Census Date is the last day to drop a course without penalty and receive a tuition refund for each course that is dropped. Courses dropped prior to census date are not assigned an official grade. Courses dropped after cnesus date are non-refundable and are assigned with an official grade of "W" (Withdrawn). Any course dropped after its specified census date is considered a course withdrawal.

  • As of Fall 2021, undergraduate degree seeking students are eligible to request grade forgiveness for a limited number of courses with grades of C- or below after repeating the same course at UCCS. The original course must have been taken in Fall 2021 or later. Both courses will display on the official student record with only the most recent course being included in the transcript GPA. 

    Grade forgiveness requests must be submitted prior to census date of the semester in which the replacement course is being taken. Course forgiveness eligibility, considerations, and request form are available on the Office of the Registrar Grade Forgiveness webpage.

  • This is the specific date/time you can begin enrolling/registering for the next term. Enrollment appointments are assigned through the Registrar's office.

    Your enrollment appointment is available in the myUCCS portal. Please note that your enrollment date/time for each term ypically will not post until shopping carts open. Follow the steps to view your enrollment appointment:

    1. Log into your myUCCS Portal
    2. Click the "Records and Registration" Dropdown
    3. Select "Access Student Self Services"
    4. Click on "Register for Classes (Add/Drop)"
    5. Look under "Enrollment Appointment" for your specific date and time.

    Note: All UCCS students will receive an email with their specific enrollment date/time on the day Enrollment Shopping Carts become available for each term. If you are a new student, you will not be able to register for classes until you complete Orientation.

  • CU GPA 2.0 or higher

    Students are considered in Good Academic Standing when their cumulative (overall) grade point averages are 2.0 or better. If students are below this measure, they may be placed on Probation within their college or Suspension. Please contact your Academic Advisor for your college's policy.

  • Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior?

    Student classification level is determined by the student career (undergraduate, graduate, graduate non-degree) and number of total earned credit hours. Total credit hours include external transfer course credit, credit earned at other University of Colorado campuses, and credits earned at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

    Undergraduate Students:

    • Freshman 1-29 total earned credits.
    • Sophomore 30-59 total earned credits.
    • Junior 60 - 89 total earned credits.
    • Senior 90-120+ earned credits.

General Enrollment Questions

Add, Drop, Waitlist, & Swapping
  • Students can add courses through their myUCCS Portal. Our Registrar's office also has a step-by-step guide along with videos to assist you.

  • Prior to dropping a course, please consult your Academic Advisor, Financial Aid, Student Financial Services, or our Veteran & Military Affairs office if you are using VA benefits. Dropping a course may affect your bill, and Academic Advisors do not have access to student financial data.

  • There are a number of reasons students may be unable to register for classes. 

    • You may be trying to register before your scheduled enrollment date/time.
    • You may not meet the prerequisites (conditions that must be met to enroll in a course). For example, if you are trying to enroll in HUM 3990, you must be at junior standing with at least 60 credit hours applied to your degree.
    • You may have a hold on your account that prevents enrollment for the upcoming semester.

    You can view the hold(s) on your account and find out how to resolve them in your UCCS Portal:

    1. Log into the myUCCS Portal
    2. Click on the "Records and Registration" tab
    3. Select the Student Self Service Center
    4. Click on Tasks-Holds
    5. Click on each hold to determine which department issued it and who you should contact to get it resolved

    Common holds include:

    • Academic Probation. If your CU GPA falls below a 2.0 and you are placed on Academic Probation, your registration will be delayed. You will not be able to register for classes until after the final grades for your current courses are posted. If you have questions about this hold or about Academic Probation policy, please contact your Academic Advisor.
    • Immunization holds. The State of Colorado requires that you have proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella while attending classes at UCCS. If you have not yet provided proof of vaccination or exemption, you will need to submit your records via the Wellness Portal. If you have questions about the immunization holds, please contact the Wellness Center at wellness@uccs.edu.
    • Financial holds. If you have a past due bill totaling over $500, you will not be able to add courses. If you're able to pay the outstanding balance, you may do so in your student portal or at the Student Financial Services office (Bursar/Cashier) in Main Hall. You may need to work with the Office of Financial Aid and/or Student Financial Services to make a plan to pay your outstaning balance.

  • Dropping a course and adding a different course can be confusing and stressful when you are worried about a course filling up. A simple way to streamline this process is by "Swapping" a course. Please see the video with instructions on how to do so.
